conclusion
Warier wasn’t in favor of a completely “open source” arrangement, where the model was shared openly and whoever was interested could take it up, due to the lack of accountability. So UnLtd India opted for a licensed franchising approach in which they provide the network, the know-how and seed funding of between 30 and 70% of their projected budget for each year for the first five years. After that, the licensee pays a franchise charge. Initial franchises in Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad and Delhi have been successful in supporting Fellows,, however, their fundraising efforts have met with varying degrees of success Ultimately, UnLtd has decided to go to scale through providing a mix of branches and franchises, to ensure the highest quality of support to its Fellows and financial stability for the branches.
Like many social enterprises it supports, UnLtd India is still innovating, experimenting and adapting. One thing Warier and her colleagues have learned is to dive in: to have faith in one’s well-founded approach and wait for the money to follow, rather than waiting for the perfect set of conditions to reunite.
