The Climate Initiative
The urgency and scale of global climate poly-crisis is such that no single actor can or will be able to address them, all. Governments, businesses, and the third sector must collaborate and co-create scalable solutions.
Africa, Asia or Latin America do not have a shortage of economic & human potential ; what is lacking is at-scale financing of evidence-based capacity building, research and mentorship of entrepreneurs that can close the de-carbonisation gap and build bankable climate solutions.ERFIP Foundation in partnership with local anchors and ERFIP families will fill this critical gap, building upon their decade long expertise in training entrepreneurs, strengthening local agency and working closely with business and governments. Five core climate challenges in Africa include rising temperatures; extreme vulnerability to climate change; land degradation; deforestation and biodiversity loss. By 2030, an estimated up to 118 million extremely poor people (i.e. living on less than US$ 1.90/day) will be further exposed to drought, floods and extreme heat. While estimates vary, projections suggest that up to 85 million people in sub-Saharan Africa could be displaced within their own countries due to climate change by 2050, according to the World Bank. |
Asia remained the world’s most disaster-affected region in 2023 due to weather, climate and water-related hazards, according to the UN. Asia’s economic stability hinges on proactive measures to curb the impacts of climate-related disasters. Swiss Re Institute has predicted that the region’s gross domestic product may decrease by more than 25% in the next 25 years without successful action on climate change.
Latin America does not fair well. World Bank estimates that about 17 million people could be internally displaced by 2030 as a result of climate change. |
Project: To support climate leadership from Asia, Africa and Latin America
How
a) Research: The climate initiative aims to engage and capacity build leading research hubs in Africa, Asia and Latin America through local partners; it will gather and publish research with a focus on impacting policies. The Hub will advocate for inclusive sustainability approaches through systemic changes.
